since the beginning
men have walked
down dusty roads
to battle
stepped off
crumbling wharfs
onto sailing ships
their eyes dazzled
by the sun
transfixed
on the horizon
the fragrance
of a new morning
in an unknown place
the intoxication of glory
obscures
the memory
of shining eyes
and tiny heartbeats
